Powrót (the Return) - multifandom vid
(my first multifandom vid and first done to instrumental music... I sure hope I can swim as well as I thought I did before jumping in here)

title: Powrót (The Return)
music: "Powrót" from Bandyta soundtrack; music composed by Michał Lorenc
fandoms: 13 of them, most importantly Star Wars, LotR and Wizard of Oz (the big road movies, y'know)
genre: mood/catharsis vid
details: Size: 720 x 480 .wmv (52.2 MB), 480 x 320 .wmv (27.5 MB); Length: 2:56
summary: “Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home.”

for Instrumental challenge at [info]multividious

I owe biggest thanks and cookies to my lovely betas: [info]ewczos, for teaching me some very helpful tricks and [info]mresundance  for an amazing eye for detail, enormous patience (as he was forced to watch me destroy many parts of this vid by excessive nervous tweaking only to restore them to previous shape afterwards), boundless enthusiasm AND making this shiny vid graphic above for me! Jesse, you're a star.

download, stream and notes under the cut

full list of fandoms used, in order of appearance:
Star Wars (A New Hope, The Phantom Menace, Return of the Jedi), Lord of the Rings (Fellowship of the Ring, Return of the King), Princess Bride, Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Stardust, Wizard of Oz, Schindler's List, Leon: the Professional, Gladiator, Finding Neverland, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Anne of Green Gables: the Sequel, Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End

download: big shiny .wmv (52.2MB), medium ok-ish .wmv (27.5MB)
stream: youtube or embedded below

notes: I have about two tonnes of vidder's notes on this little thing, but I'll let you all have a chance at your own interpretation. It's a very simple concept, after all, even if better people wrote ginormous theses or shot grandest movie trilogies about it. My aim was basically to make you smile, then cry and then laugh; but I'll take any emotions Return manages to squeeze from you, in any configuration. Concrit is also always welcome, as is long winded, veering off topic meta discussion

Okay, I'm so breathless right now that I'm going to have to watch this a couple dozen times before I can figure out what to say about it other than "omg beautiful"

...omg beautiful !

ladymajavader: ladymajavader[info]ladymajavader on June 28th, 2008 05:43 am (UTC)
...I made you breathless! That's rewards enough.

And "omg beautiful" - never a bad feedback, I can totally live with that :)
singing desire into being[info]montisello on June 28th, 2008 01:57 am (UTC)
That was really sweet! What a great theme to chose, and excellent music to go with it. Thanks for sharing, and your hard work really shows. This is beautiful.
ladymajavader: ladymajavader[info]ladymajavader on June 28th, 2008 05:46 am (UTC)
Thank you!
The theme and music choice were definitely a package deal - the music jumped at me and demanded to tell a story full of ancient toposes and archetypes, and who was I to say no?
Ferd: Cinderella Slipper[info]ferdalump on June 28th, 2008 05:15 am (UTC)
That was extremely beautiful! Very nice piece. :) Thanks for sharing!
ladymajavader: ladymajavader[info]ladymajavader on June 28th, 2008 05:49 am (UTC)
Glad you enjoyed it, Ferd! Your "Strip" was a great inspiration to me in terms of using the source's internal motion to tie the clips together.

Icon love! <3 [/randomness]

I gotta go to work like, NOW, but I popped in to go *squee*! :D More later!
ladymajavader: ladymajavader[info]ladymajavader on June 28th, 2008 01:12 pm (UTC)
*hugs*
I would say something about you returning home, but nah. You already know.
the sundance kid: pilgrim[info]mresundance on June 28th, 2008 05:42 pm (UTC)
*silly grin*

I didn't totally hear this song in my head on the way home from work! :P

I also totally said everything I wanted to say about the vid when I recced it: The sweetest journey is the one which brings you back home, in a nutshell. I'm totally biased in that I got to beta it, but I have to say it's one top five favorite vids of all time, and that's saying a lot because I am pretty picky. It actually made me cry and I don't usually cry because of vids. It has absolutely something for EVERYONE, even if you aren't into vids and vidding. Just click on the link and watch the imeem or youtube stream (no downloading required!). I promise it will make you feel like the sun is in your heart.

Additionally (and now this requires a side story): Stephen Stills always said that the one song he wished he had written was "Blackbird" by the Beatles.

I kinda feel that way about this vid. Like this is the one vid I wish I had edited, but happily, you did and you did it at least ten times better than I would've. So I'm very happy to have that kind of nostalgia and affection about this vid. :)
ladymajavader: ladymajavader[info]ladymajavader on June 28th, 2008 06:03 pm (UTC)
*bursts with pride*

but Stephen Stills didn't get to co-write Blackbird - and you had a hand in shaping The Return. Thanks for pushing me to make this vid the best I could make it!

And from now on I'm leaving the marketing to you, because your rec is brilliant and apparently works :)

:P

I hope it works!

I feel kinda bad for people who don't watch this vid, really. What, you had to go off and watch "Friends"? Make spaghetti? Have hot sex? What is WRONG with you people? Your lives are empty, hollow things.
the sundance kid: [crazy circles] car[info]mresundance on June 28th, 2008 06:08 pm (UTC)
PS. I also totally love that the title is Polish, as are the credits.

I don't know why, but it seemed fitting. Because vidding fandom is heavily dominated by people in the US and the UK, which are both countries with majority English speakers. There's that tendency sometimes to forget that not everyone is in the US/UK, that there are probably loads of vidders all over the globe.

It just thought it was cool that you returned home in that way, just by simply having the text be in Polish.

And of course, the music is by a Polish composer. :D

And of course, Joe Campbell squee. He would approve. :D
ladymajavader: ladymajavader[info]ladymajavader on June 28th, 2008 06:38 pm (UTC)
Considering how universal this vid was meant to be I didn't think the language of credits mattered that much, as long as the audience could discern the main theme. So in a very rare moment of disregarding my audience's demographics I let my Polish patriotism shine through :)
And the fact that I could pimp a Polish composer a little was a very nice bonus too ;)

Seriously, I don't vid much in Polish only partly due to the fact that there is much less songs to choose from - it's mostly because the audience would be far smaller. And I'm a total feedback addict, unfortunately.

You really think Campbell would approve? That would be the highest seal of approval I could have dreamed of, methinks... Well, maybe apart from Lucas'.
But I bet when Lucas was being patted on the head by Campbell, he was totally full of fanboy squee too :)

Oh, that's lovely! I would not have expected to be so engaged by the instrumental music, but it totally worked.

Downloading -- this is a keeper.
ladymajavader: ladymajavader[info]ladymajavader on June 28th, 2008 06:06 pm (UTC)
oh thank you so much! Just the knowledge that my vid ended up in some strange, far away land hard drive *for keeps* makes me do a happy dance!
Invisible Friend[info]el1ie on June 29th, 2008 08:20 am (UTC)
Here from [info]mresundance rec

Yeah, well you might like to think it's a very simple concept and it very well may be, but the incredibly intense emotions this conjures up are anything but simple. Added to that is the sheer beauty of the way all these clips are edited, which makes it so breathtaking and the result is truly fabulous.

Thanks so much for sharing. :))

Edited to add: I'm putting a rec in my journal pointing to this entry, hope that's ok with you.

yep, [info]mresundance is definitely a brilliant marketing strategist :)

Thanks for the lovely feedback; it's so good to hear Powrót is eliciting such strong emotions (and thus fulfilling it's purpose;)

and of course I don't mind, I'm chuffed actually! Thanks for letting me know

Commenting on this one...still I feel like I should not do this, it's just a kind of blasphemy. You're unaware of how much "Powrót" means to me. From the first time I saw it till now it's on a highest top of my "Unforgettable videos". Every time I watch it I have this feeling that the way you matched scenes with music is the only right way.
Ten, w którym wyrazi siebie, zawrze przekaz. :)
ladymajavader[info]ladymajavader on August 23rd, 2008 12:56 pm (UTC)
You're right about one thing - I didn't realize how much this little vid meant to you - and I'm chuffed that you hold it in such high regard.
Also, your conviction that each clip is in the only right place (when I shifted them around a bazillion times), proves that you're not a very critical beta :P But your enthusiasm was very important for my creative process.

(innymi słowy: do roboty! :D)

This is a wonderful vid!
Nearly all of the films belong among my all time favorites! The music choice was great and I loved the editing, too.
It was truly an emotional ride :) I almost cried the first time I saw it - I tried really hard not to, because I wanted to catch every single frame and not miss anything. Tears can get in the way while watching music videos :)
You should make more multifandom vids, I love them <3
ladymajavader[info]ladymajavader on November 27th, 2008 07:20 pm (UTC)
Thank you dear! I'm so glad it got such a strong emotional response from you - I did my job well then :) And don't be afraid of watching fanvids through tears - because you can always watch them again!

Very late feedback, but I was so happy to find a download link for this! This is such a beautiful vid, with such a coherent, universal narrative, simple and so epic. I love all the mirroring you pulled out of all the different sources and the way the journeys and emotion build and crescendo.
ladymajavader: ladymajavader[info]ladymajavader on November 22nd, 2009 03:26 pm (UTC)
No such thing as late feedback, especially when it's so lovely. Thanks for reminding me why I love vidding.
